Who runs the Bedford Towers Leaseholders Association (BTLA)?
It is run by Leaseholders of Bedford Towers, Brighton, completely unpaid. We do not work for the Managing Agent, but we aim to work with them and have a constructive and positive relationship. Our ethos is conversation not confrontation, explanation not complaints, solutions not problems.
How is the BTLA run?
We operate according to the guidelines in the constitution. We have a committee which is elected annually at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The committee meets at least 4 times a year – three committee meetings and one AGM.
We also have sub-committees for various functions such as Repairs, Heating & Hot Water who meet separately and report in at the committee meetings.
We aim to meet with the Managing Agent either before or after the committee meetings.
Tell me more about the Committee Meetings
They normally take place at least every 3 months. Requests by leaseholders and residents about any issues are discussed, unless they are time-critical, in which case the committee is consulted by email.
The Agenda can be seen on the Meetings page of this website. We approve the minutes of the previous committee meeting, hear reports from the sub-committees, and discuss any issues that have been raised by residents.
Can anyone come to the committee meetings?
Members of the BTLA have a right to come along and to speak, but only committee members can vote at the meeting. To join the BTLA you must be a leaseholders. The date and time is on the Meetings page of this website.
How long does it take for the Committee to discuss things that leaseholders ask you about?
When a leaseholder emails the BTLA to ask for support on a particular issue, it may be discussed at the next Committee Meeting. These take place approximately every three months. Everyone gives their time free of charge, and this is felt to be a manageable time commitment.
If the issue is time critical we endeavour to contact all the committee or go straight to the Managing Agent for clarification, whatever is most appropriate.
If the issue is relevant to a sub-committee it will be dealt with by that sub-committee who will report on it at the next committee meeting.
The BTLA has a policy of only getting involved in issues that affect all or most leaseholders, or the whole building. We don’t have the time or resources to support individual grievances that only affect one or a few residents.
